Red Light Walks Berlin is a project led by sex workers who are not only deeply committed to their respective communities but have also embraced an educational mission to engage mainstream society. In collaboration with Trans*SexWorks, Slut Riot Berlin, and Demokratie in der Mitte Berlin, Red Light Walks offers residents, Berliners, and visitors valuable insights into the history and culture of the Schöneberg and Mitte districts—both shaped by the lives, work, and activism of sex workers.
Since September 2022, Trans*SexWorks has partnered with the Red Light Walks team to organize a series of walks in Schöneberg. This district has been home to sex workers since 1885, long before it became the LGBTQ+ hotspot it is known as today. We warmly invite locals—neighbors, friends, allies, and others—to engage with the rich history of Berlin’s unofficial red-light district.
Berlin Mitte, similarly, has a long and complex history intertwined with sex work. Known for its vibrant urban landscape, Mitte has been both a center of political and cultural life and a place where sex work has thrived, especially in the pre- and post-war periods. Through these tours, we invite participants to discover how sex workers have contributed to the unique character of Mitte, from the early 20th century to today, enriching Berlin’s cultural tapestry through resilience, advocacy, and community building.
